CJ Stander has all but confirmed what we all wanted to believe about Peter O’Mahony

He well deserves it, too

Peter O’Mahony is set to be named the Lions’ Test captain tomorrow and his Munster colleague CJ Stander believes he is the best man for the job.

The Corkonian vaulted himself into captaincy contention with a pair of momentous performances against the Maori All Blacks and first the Crusaders.

Peter O’Mahony’s ability in the lineout, sheer physicality around the pitch and merciless work at the breakdown – in attack and defence – is a huge asset to Warren Gatland’s side.

He was at his powerful best against the Crusaders two weekends ago and after captaining the Lions last Saturday, according to Stander, he is now set to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Brian O’Driscoll and Paul O’Connell to captain the Lions in a Test game.

“He is a great leader. He’s my captain at Munster and he works hard for the team,’ said Stander. “His heart is on his sleeve and I don’t think there’s an awful lot of leaders like him,” said Stander.

“He shows it on the pitch and he shows it in his aggression. He is a great captain and we all know that – he will make us proud.

“There are a lot of leaders in the group and everybody helps each other and pushes each other on. There are four or five voices in the squad. Hopefully, this weekend we will see how the squad pushes him on. He is ready to step up. He doesn’t even have to step up. He’s ready to do it.” Stander told reporters.
Sam Warburton is the Lions’ tour captain but the Welshman is expected to miss out on making the Lions’ starting Test team due to an ankle injury.
Warren Gatland will confirm his captain and starting XV for the first Test at 8pm Irish time on Wednesday.
