Karmichael Hunt is a three code star in Australia

Massive news from Australian sport

While switching between rugby league and rugby union is common these days, few who do it ever make it in a third sport. That was just part of what made Karmichael Hunt such a superstar in Australia. The 28-year-old, who was born in New Zealand, began his career in rugby league, becoming a huge star for the Brisbane Broncos as well as representing Queensland in the massive State of Origin series.

Then he made the swith to rugby union in 2009, playing for Biarritz for six months in the Top 14 as well as the Heineken Cup.

After that he switched to Aussie Rules with Gold Coast, which wasn’t that much of a success before returning to union last summer with the Queensland Reds.

However, his sporting future now looks in serious doubt as the Guardian report he has been arrested and charged for supplying cocaine.

Just days after his debut for the Reds Hunt was served with a notice to appear in court regarding four counts of supply last night, so a massive shadow now hangs over his sporting career.

Also implicated were current Gold Coast Titans rugby league players Beau Fallon who faces four counts of supply and Jamie Dowling who faces two counts of supply and seven counts of possession. A 22-year-old woman was also involved.

The authorities in Australia say that the four were “identified allegedly arranging the supply of cocaine during an ongoing drug trafficking investigation”.

The Australian Rugby Union statement says: The ARU’s Integrity team and the Queensland Rugby Union are making enquiries into the reports. We’ll be in a position to comment in more detail once those enquiries have progressed.”

Hunt is due in court on March 5.
