Absolutely devastating news for Chris Farrell as injury confirmed

Matthew Gault

Massive blow for Ireland.

Although Joe Schmidt seemed fairly relaxed about the knock Chris Farrell picked up during the win over Wales at the weekend, the IRFU have confirmed that the centre may well miss the rest of the Six Nations tournament.

Farrell was extremely impressive during Ireland’s win at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, being named man of the match in what was his Six Nations debut, but concerns grew when the Munster man was spotted receiving treatment during Tuesday’s open training session.

Confirming the news on Tuesday afternoon, the IRFU said:

“Chris Farrell received treatment on the field earlier today after twisting his knee in the turf.   He subsequently jogged on to re-join the rest of the playing group and felt well.

“He was sent for a precautionary scan this afternoon which indicated some ligament damage had occurred and he will now see a specialist.  Chris is unlikely to be available for the remainder of the 6 Nations.

Given his contribution in the win over Wales, it’s a devastating blow for Ireland.

Schmidt will now be forced into a rethink, with Rory Scannell, Keith Earls and Garry Ringrose all possible candidates to come in and replace the 24-year-old.
