It’s along way from Dungannon in Tyrone and Killarney in Kerry to winning a world rally event but not if you’re Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle.
The Irishmen claimed the first WRC victory together in their Citroen today,18.1 seconds ahead of Citroen team-mate Mads Ostberg.
Defending champion Sebastien Ogier came home in 14th position in his VW.
The win was a sweet success for Meeke who had failed to finish the first three events of the new WRC season due to crashes.
Speaking afterwards Meeke paid tribute to his hero Colin McCrae who died in an helicopter accident in 2007,
‘The one guy who did most for me isn’t here to see this. This is for Colin. He helped my career out at the very beginning. He supported me financially through to the world championship. Without his support I wouldn’t be here.’
The Irishmen led for almost all of the race as Citroen claimed its first 1-2 finish for almost three years/
