There are a lot of moving parts in the UFC’s middleweight division lately.
As recently as last week, the next title fight at 185lbs looked destined to be Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre but a lot has happened since then.
After insisting upon a fight in late 2017, welterweight great St-Pierre saw his title shot ripped away from him by UFC president Dana White.
But, having initially ridiculed St-Pierre for pushing for a late date, Bisping has maintained that he’s still hoping for that bout to come to fruition.
‘The Count’ announced that he is struggling with a knee injury and suggested that he would not be able to compete until after the summer anyway so may as well wait for St-Pierre.
It seems like a day can’t pass without some update or another in the UFC’s middleweight division and the latest arrived with the suggestion that we could be looking at an interim title fight this summer.
Dana White is not prepared to let the 185lbs title picture go stale and has admitted that he is looking at matching up the rightful number one contender, Yoel Romero, with the streaking Robert Whittaker for interim gold. White told ESPN:
“We’re trying to put together that Bisping-Romero fight.
“If (Bisping) can’t fight this summer, we’ll probably create an interim title between Romero and Robert Whittaker.”
White did not mention a date for the interim title fight but it’s a move that will divide opinion among fans because it seems like every other month we hear about an intention to create an interim title.
