The perfect major MMA promotion has picked up Aaron Chalmers.
Whether you like it or not, there’s no denying that people are interested in seeing Aaron Chalmers fight.
Does that mean he deserves to fight in the UFC? Hell no!
Considering the UFC has the vast majority of the world’s elite on its roster, they still set a standard. UFC calibre is a thing. There have been very notable exceptions to this unspoken rule in the past, but they haven’t exactly worked out too well.
We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief that we won’t be watching a reality TV star fight a professional wrestler inside the Octagon.
The Big Leagues
After racking up three wins in as many professional fights, Chalmers has signed for a major MMA promotion. He will make his promotional debut on the main card of Bellator 200 against Ash Griffiths (4-5) at The SSE Arena, Wembley in London on Friday, May 25.
This is the perfect signing for the promotion, who have had problems finding their identity among their competitors. In the past, we’ve seen them throw out freakshow and veteran league fights such as Kimbo Slice vs Dada 5000 and Royce Gracie vs Ken Shamrock.
However, signing green prospects and building them up is another avenue they have been exploring. They’ve got in very promising rising stars such as Aaron Pico, James Gallagher, AJ McKee and Michael ‘Venom’ Page. We’re not suggesting Chalmers is on any of their levels, but a similar slow build approach could be used in his case to allow his game to develop.

Chalmers can certainly fight, but the question remains how high his ceiling is. So far we’ve only seen him fight a certain standard of regional fighter. That is unlikely to change in the immediate future, but we may as well enjoy the ride while it lasts.
If it’s not your cup of tea or you feel morally opposed to seeing a reality star fight in a cage, the solution is simple. Don’t watch.
