“Due to an emergency, we are allowing Darren Till one extra hour to make weight”.
The press at UFC Liverpool assembled for the weigh-ins on Saturday morning but the headliner, the home fighter missed the two-hour window.
Shortly after 11am, the deadline, the media were notified of a family emergency and told that Till would be given time to come back and be weighed.
At 11.23am, he showed up and stood on the scales and a number not even close to his welterweight target was read out.
174.5.
174.5. His opponent, Stephen Wonderboy Thompson, hit his grace weight perfectly at 171 but Till’s weight threw the entire event into question.
After the weigh-in, he left again and the media sat and waited with no announcement.
As this isn’t a title fight, the pair could agree on a catchweight with Thompson perhaps given a greater percentage of the purse to keep the event on the cards and keep the herds of fans who are turning out to support Till happy.
What it does mean though is, by Sunday night, neither fighter will be anywhere near a welterweight weight.
Ahead of the bout, Till spoke with BT Sport and JOE.co.uk and said that he was going to have a big job on his hands to cut the weight.
“Everyone knows I’ve got a big weight cut so tonight’s the night to shed those kilos.”
Perhaps he didn’t appreciate just how big a job he really had.
As it stands, no announcement has been made yet about the fight but more question marks appear over the heads of the UFC.
