Shane Lowry: This has been the greatest week of my life

Niall McIntyre

Shane Lowry has called his week in Rome the best of his life.

For the Offaly man, it started with a powerful foursomes victory alongside Sepp Straka and at this stage, it’s hard to know where it’s going to end.

“I’ve never seen Shane Lowry run away from a drink,” said Andrew Coltart on Sky Sports.

He certainly won’t tonight.

Lowry’s half-point in his singles match with Jordan Spieth wasn’t quite the clincher – Tommy Fleetwood had already sealed the deal for Europe – but it was hard earned and it did spark some wild scenes of celebration.

The Irishman’s emotional investment in this competition has been apparent from the outset.

While some players play with a poker-face, Lowry holds nothing back and celebrates every dropping putt like it’s a goal in the county final.

So there he was, thumping his chest, clenching his fists and dancing around the green as Rory McIlroy showered him with champagne.

This was Lowry’s first Ryder Cup win, having lost two years ago in Whistling Straits and afterwards, on Sky Sports, he said that this was something he always wanted to do.

“I just said to Luke, ‘Thank you for having placing your trust in me’. This is a dream come true for me… this is something I always wanted to do in my life… it has been the greatest week of my life.

“Those last two hours were the most stressful of my life… myself, Tommy and Bob joked this morning, ‘I hope it doesn’t come down to us’.

“But I’m glad that we could win it… I’m disappointed that I didn’t win my match, but I don’t really care as long as we won.”

“I’m going back to Florida tomorrow, and I might see if I can drag Rory out with me for a couple of days,” he laughed.

Later on, over on NBC Sports, Lowry cut away from his interview to hug Tommy Fleetwood and shout, ‘I f*cking love you!”
