Rickie Fowler’s Players Championship win contradicts a pretty insulting PGA poll

A pretty good way to answer your critics

Neil Treacy

I wouldn’t mind being as “overrated” as Rickie Fowler.

The 26-year-old, who had a top five finish at every major championship in 2014, was jointly ranked the most overrated player on the tour in an anonymous poll among his fellow pros last week, and he picked a fine way to answer his critics last night.

Fowler found himself in a playoff at Sawgrass last night after hitting a record five under in his last four holes (birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie), and then held off both Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner over four playoff holes, including two more birdied visits to the treacherous par 3 17th.

He eventually won after birdieing the 17th for a third time in three visits that day, absolutely drilling this tee shot to within a few feet of the hole, eventually allowing the knackered Irish TV viewers get a few hours sleep.

Oh, and on top of silencing his critics, he also picked up a cool $1,800,000 for his troubles.

The other most overrated player on the list? Ian Poulter.
