At the age of 54, Padraig Harrington is currently in a tie for 19th place at the PGA Championship at Aronimink near Philadelphia.
After an early birdie, the 2008 champion had three bogeys before he came to the 16th hole.
He duly chipped in for eagle on that par 5, before chipping in for birdie on the 18th for a round of one under par.
It is likely to be his best finish at a major since the PGA Championship in 2021, where he was T4.
Some golfers, such as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, were critical of the golf course set up this week.
He said: “I would have thought the fans loved it.
“Maybe from a players’ perspective that we are trying to make pars but the fans love a bit of drama, don’t they?
“I always think they love when we look very human and expose our frailties.
“I would have said that yesterday’s pins were going to be today’s pins and today’s pins would have been yesterday’s.
“They definitely were easier today. A lot of bowls today.
“Yesterday’s wre the ones that seemed like the toughest of them and would have definitely been a Saturday pin position.
“Probably too extreme for Sunday so maybe you could have mixed up the days but over the three days, it’s probably what we expected.
“I, for one, don’t want to see 20 under-par anyway. I’m not going to compete on a golf course like that.
“I want to see a golf course that level par is a decent score and six, seven, eight under-par is winning.”
