While Rory’s away, Rickie will play.
Before Jordan Spieth’s ridiculous breakout season, the American media loved to play up the suppposed Rory McIlroy v Rickie Fowler rivalry.
The duo are the same age and play aggressively but Fowler hasn’t achieved anything close to what McIlroy has. Before today, Fowler had only won two career events, whereas Rory has more victories than that from majors alone.
But with McIlroy missing next weekend’s Open Championship through injury, Fowler might be ready to capitalise. The American birdied the 18th today to win the Scottish Open, in a field that was packed full of golfers moving on to play at St Andrews next week.
Naturally, the Americans got carried away once more.

The bad news for Fowler is that Spieth is still looming. The American is currently playing at the John Deere Classic and is just two shots off the lead early in his final round.
