Graeme McDowell has been one of the most outspoken players since LIV Golf's inception in 2022. Most golfers remained subtle about signing under the Saudi Arabian venture, however, McDowell originally sang the praises of the new tour.
The Northern Irishman is now part of the rebranded LIV Smash GC team which is now named Oklahoma GC, with captain Talor Gooch, Harold Varner III and Jason Kokrak.
When originally joining LIV, McDowell said: "I really feel golf is a force for good in the world and I love using the game of golf as something to help grow around the world and be role models for kids. If Saudi Arabia want to use the game of golf as a way for them to get to somewhere they want to be, I think we're proud to help them on their journey, using the game of golf and the abilities we have to help grow the sport".
Flash forward four years to today and 'G-Mac' has admitted to being dishonest about the real reason he signed on the dotted red line for LIV Golf.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated ahead of LIV Golf Virginia, G-Mac said: "I regret a few things I said in the beginning, stuff like growing the game. I should have just said what it was: this is good for my bank account, and I'm getting a runaway to play the game of golf for as long as I possibly can".
"I don't think we could have ever imagined how deep this would go. The hatred. It's funny, but if we can shift the narrative away from Saudi Arabia and bring some U.S money we can get rid of that narrative".
These admissions come after recent news that LIV Golf could be on the verge of going out of business due to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund set to pull their funding at the end of the 2026 tour.
