Five birdies in last six holes as Rory McIlroy wins first tournament since 2016

Whisper it, but there’s a chance that Rory McIlroy is back. Again.

The Hollywood native stormed to Arnold Palmer Invitational success in Florida on Sunday night and took the shares of a nifty $8,900,000 purse.

Ahead of the Masters on April 5, McIlroy claimed his first trophy since 2016 and even staved off late pressure from golf’s most famous son, Tiger Woods.

At one stage in the fourth round, Woods sat just one shot off McIlroy but a simply stunning back nine saw the County Down native sweep the rest of the field aside as Woods eventually fell away.

But what McIlroy did in the last six holes just summed up why he’s still so feared in golf circles and will be for the rest of his career. They say that there are some men who ‘on their day’ could work miracles – but Rory McIlroy could conjure heaven and hell at the same time on his day and, when he got a taste of blood, he was ruthless.

He finished the tournament with five birdies in the final six holes to complete a special round of -8 for the day.

With Augusta and that famous green jacket on the horizon once more, McIlroy will naturally be talked up like he always is but, this time, he’ll head there in serious, serious form.
