Great news
20-year-old Leona Maguire is one of the risging stars of women’s golf, and tonight she been rewarded for her outstanding form with one of the sport’s top honours.
The Cavan native has been given a prize to mark her standing as the best amateur player in the world in 2015.
Maguire has been awarded the Mark H McCormack Medal after winning three events, while she also narrowly missed out on claiming a unique success at the Ladies European Masters in Britain last month.
She is the first Irish woman to ever win the award, and the Duke college student in the US is expected to become one of the world’s top professional players in the coming years, while she may also hope to represent Ireland at the Olympics
The Irishwoman was delighted with the win,
“To be able to call myself the best female amateur in the world is a nice feeling. It caps a fantastic year for me and it is rewarding after all the hard work I have put in, and for my family as well.”
