There won’t be a cow milked in The Loup tonight.
Anthony O’Neill might never have to buy a pint around south Derry ever again. They’ll be writing poems about him, singing songs of his glory, and telling stories over the fire of that one Sunday in Glenullin.
Glenullin 0-0 Loup 1-0.
Who will ever forget it? When 15 men from loughshore stood up and were counted for against the might of… well, no-one.
Glenullin didn’t field because of the choice of referee.
But, listen, you can only beat what’s put in front of you and the visitors beat it well.
Anthony O’Neill doesn’t miss from six yards, he never does – not when there’s no ‘keeper in goals – so, when the opportunity presented itself, he hammered home the winner with the last kick of the game.
It was also the second kick of the game.
After match official Declan O’Connor was seemingly instructed to throw the ball in with two Loup midfielders uncontested in the middle, they went straight for goals, O’Neill buried his only chance, and everyone walked off the pitch.
The crowd bloody loved it regardless as it was all captured wonderfully by James Maunsell.
It also looked to be captured by the stats man who was so committed to his job that he recorded every movement in that 13 seconds. It’ll be a quick video session this week.
