One school of thought might suggest that Kerry would regret being filmed carrying a case of Paddy Whiskey to the changing room before their under-21 All-Ireland semi-final.
Another might be right in thinking that they’d regret NOT having the whiskey after an agonising loss to Galway.
Legendary Roscommon goalkeeper Shane Curran wrote in his autobiography about his time playing with Athlone Town in the League of Ireland in 1994. Derry City were in town for the last game of the season and they had to just win to clinch the title.
The sight of Phil Coulter unloading champagne before the game was enough for Cake to scupper those plans though and go on to produce one of the most inspired performances in goals. Derry never got to celebrate with that champagne.
But, whilst Kerry might not have been singing in the changing rooms after Saturday’s semi-final defeat, they’d have been thankful for their foresight.
Before Galway inflicted some sort of revenge for last year’s minor final defeat, the Kingdom were spotted carrying two essential items to the changing rooms.
- Box of bananas
- Box of Paddy Whiskey
How could anyone get through a game without either?
With the final set for two weeks time on Saturday 29 April (Galway and Dublin will meet in the decider), the Kerry lads might’ve had time to recover from a quick drink after the game anyway but they definitely had time for it after the Tribesmen ran out 2-14 to 2-10 winners in the end.
A banana and the hair of the dog, the Paddy’s cure.
