WATCH: RTÉ perfectly illustrate how the All-Ireland final is for everyone who loves Gaelic football

Mikey Stafford

This game needs no promoting, so we must thank RTÉ for doing so anyway.

The sense of anticipation around Dublin today is palpable. The quiet morning streets are dotted with Dublin fans in sky blue and the odd Mayo invader, enjoying an early morning, nerve-settling stroll in their green and red.

The biggest game of the year is hours away and just in case you needed it ramped up a little bit more, the Sunday Game have released their pre-match promo.

Featuring beautiful archive footage from previous finals and Dublin-Mayo clashes of the past, interspersed with some nice scenes from grassroots and underage matches, it perfectly portrays how the third Sunday of September is for the entire Gaelic games community, not just the two counties involved (at least that is what a junior C footballer from Wexford thinks).

It finished with an image of the Pigeon House smoke stacks alongside Croagh Patrick – the two emblematic scenes from the two competing counties.

Throw in a reading of WB Yeats’ poem Easter 1916 and the hairs should be standing to attention on the back of your neck.

Stephen Rochford chats with Colm Parkinson on The GAA Hour, heated Lee Keegan debate, and Barry Cahill is outnumbered by Mayo backers. Subscribe here on iTunes.
