Welcome back ‘Star

Dublin are down in Killarney this afternoon for their Allianz league clash with Kerry and the 2013 All-ireland champions aren’t showing too much respect to the Sam Maguire holders on their home patch.

Kieran Donaghy is back in green and gold for the first time since his club Austin Stacks departed the All-Ireland series, and he’s got a pretty hefty welcome back to inter-county action.

The Kerry full forward was contesting a hop-ball with Dublin midfielder Denis Bastick when the number eight grabbed Donaghy around the neck and hauled him to the ground.

The Kerry players didn’t like it one little bit and it resulted in a little bit of a skirmish that saw Tomas Brady yellow carded.

Referee Eddie Kinsella had no choice but to flash a card and luckily for Dublin it was black rather than red for Bastick.

In fairness, Donaghy is a huge man and the tackle was probably more awkward than malicious. Nonetheless, any tackle that high usually means a referee can reach for red so Jim Gavin is probably relieved that Dublin were able to bring Cian O’Sullivan on as a replacement.
