A quality tribute to a real legend of the game.
GAA fans up and down the country had been eagerly anticipating the premiere of Micko, the new documentary looking at the incredible life and career of Mick O’Dwyer.
The legendary football manager, who led Kerry to eight All-Ireland titles in an 11-year period between 1975-86 during his illustrious career, narrated the poignant film which chronicled his obsessive, to use his words, love of the game.
It’s fair to say it struck a chord among those watching, with effusive praise on social media being showered on the 81-year-old throughout its transmission on RTÉ One, with particular emphasis on his personality and infectious, undying passion for the game of football, be it playing, coaching or watching from the stands to this day.
There were stirring moments, for sure, but also lines that brought a tear of laughter to your eye, like his description of Eoin Liston: “a great man for the Mars bars and a packet of Smarties.” Has to be an early contender for quote of the year.

Have to respect #Micko for what he achieved as a manager both inside and outside of Kerry.
Clearly a nice guy but his ruthless streak is what forged a winning mentality in the teams he managed.

#Micko fat shaming the Bomber Liston:
"He was fierce pudgy when he first arrived onto the Kerry panel. He must have been fond of a few Mars bars and a packet of Smarties."

A brilliant watch from start to finish. They don’t make many like him, there’s no doubt about it.
