The sky blue is no more.
10 years is too long for a powerhouse of colleges football to wait for a reunion with the Sigerson Cup.
Since 2008, Jordanstown – and now the Ulster University – have been seeking a return to the big time. They got back to the final in 2011 and 2014 but, twice, they were pipped by UCC to the glory and the appetite grows bigger.
In that time, so many good men have come through the doors of Ulster, coaches from Mickey Moran to Adrian McGuckin to Martin McHugh and some of the finest talents in all of the GAA from the west coast to the north and all over the province have kicked ball for the college.
There’s always a bit of romance when it comes to Ulster University and the Sigerson Cup but the colours they’re associated with – the sky blue, the white and the navy – have been altered in a new rebrand for 2018/19.
The pain of losing an extra time thriller to UCD will have hurt everyone involved with Ulster University but watching the Dublin outfit reclaim the Sigerson will no doubt have reinvigorated the campuses up north with a feeling of what might’ve been and, certainly, what can be.
To that end, they’re back but they’re back with a new look.
The university has rebranded and now will wear navy, gold and white as their official colours.
They can still use blue in their leisure gear and the blue will still be available in select jerseys but, now, the new look is navy, gold and white and the away kit will also be white with navy.
The Sigerson Cup last year was run off over 19 days from the end of January to February 17.
The fixtures for 2019 are yet to be released but the magic of the competition still survives, despite the apathy towards it from the calendar-makers.
Tyrone All-Star and Young Footballer of the Year nominee Michael McKernan will be representing Ulster University in their new navy this season.
