Trinity College Dublin caused a major upset last night in Division One of the league when they defeated rivals UCD at Belfield.
The Trinity lads travelled to their near neighbours in hope of picking up a much needed win after losing their opening league game to other Dublin rivals, DCU.
Oh by gad we'll be back.
Next outing for our Senior Hurlers will be against old rivals @UCDGAA and we're buzzing for the trip out to Belfield College of Further Education 🔴⚫️🔴⚫️#shtaygoing #UpTrin pic.twitter.com/vXCOgC5g3H— Trinity College GAA (@TCDGAA) October 18, 2018
The two sides went tit for tat throughout the opening exchanges, trading points and battling hard. Midway through the half UCD edged in front. Trinity responded in kind though through a goal from fresher and debut man, Mike Kelly.
The euphoria of the goal was quickly wiped out as Trinity were reduced to 14 men ten minutes before half time. The red card clearly galvanised the Belfield boys and they could have had a goal of their own had it not been for a brilliant save by Billa Skell in goal.
UCD finished the half stronger though, and went in one point in front, 0-13 – 1-09.

UCD carried their momentum into the second half, stretching their lead to two points, before some fine score taking from Sean O’Connor pegged them back.
The two teams played out an enthralling match that you couldn’t take your eyes off. To add to the drama, UCD’s goalkeeper stepped up to fire home a penalty and put them back in front, and looking like they could push on with the extra man.
FINAL WHISTLE GOES WE'VE ONLY GONE AND DONE IT!!
Absolutely unreal win away to local rivals with only 14 men for 40 minutes of the game… I tell yas we're tearing the arse off her tonight YUPYAAAAAAA 🔴⚫️

Trinity responded in kind though, Donncha Butler smashing home a goal to put them back in control of the game, it was a lead they never surrendered as they went on to claim a huge scalp that will have put the whole country on watch.
Man of the match on the night was shared between, Sean ‘The Mountain’ O’Connor and Mark Corry.

The win is huge for Trinity college who are competing in Division One for the first time. They have been a coming force for a while, but have yet to fully make the breakthrough. It may have only been a league game, but a win over one of college hurling’s heavyweights will give them great confidence going into the Fitzgibbon Cup.
Also, a special mention for the Trinity College GAA twitter page for a highly entertaining feed all evening. This is our favourite tweet from the match.
Karl Weldon makes his first start for the senior team tonight. He'll be Karl Welded later from lads buying him pints if he keeps his man scoreless tonight.
