Winning both is a rare feat.
Slaughtneil have mastered it in recent years in Derry while in Tipperary, the great Loughmore-Castleiney did the double in 2013. St Finbarr’s conquered football and hurling and football back in the 80s in Cork while in Dublin, St Vincent’s have managed it on more than one occasion.
This year, only one team in all of Ireland’s 32 counties are still on course to complete the elusive double. Kilmacud Crokes are preparing for a Dublin senior hurling final against Ballyboden St Enda’s this Sunday, while eight days later, the same club’s footballers will take on St Jude’s in the football decider on the bank holiday Monday.
A telling statistic, however, is that Ross O’Carroll and Barry O’Rourke are the only two Kilmacud Crokes players are involved in both panels.
We take you through how every county championship in the country stands right now. The case in the Leitrim SHC caught the eye, with this Saturday’s final also being the very first round of the championship.
Honourable mentions go to the men of counties like Wicklow, where men like Leighton Glynn and other players are in with a chance of winning both. They play hurling for different clubs though.
