New York coming to Tullamore in exciting Tailteann Cup quarter final draw

Niall McIntyre

The draw for the first ever Tailteann Cup quarter finals took place this morning on RTÉ radio.

As it was supposed to, the competition has had some very tight games so far and, with just eight teams left standing now, it’s bound to get more exciting over the coming weeks.

Cavan were the pre-tournament favourites and, with a facile win over Down in their first outing, they’ve done little to change that. Carlow produced the shock of the competition so far in beating 2020 Munster champions Tipperary in Cullen Park while Westmeath, Offaly, Leitrim and Fermanagh were all impressive over the weekend.

Sligo, perhaps less so, though they still showed some grit to defeat London in extra-time while New York also enter the competition on a bye this weekend.

It was Dublin footballer Noelle Healy who made the draw on Morning Ireland and, with the competition divided into southern and northern sections, the full draw is below.

Northern section

Leitrim v Sligo

Fermanagh v Cavan

Southern section

Carlow v Westmeath

Offaly v New York

It’s New York’s first championship game in Ireland since they played Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park in 2001 and, speaking on Morning Ireland, Offaly manager John Maughan says his boys are looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m looking forward to the fanfare and the excitement of New York coming to Tullamore. We’re huge fans of the competition and we’re really looking forward to it next weekend,” he said.
