Mayo suffer double injury blow ahead of relegation crunch match

Matthew Gault

This Sunday, Mayo face Donegal in Ballybofey in a crucial relegation clash.

And they’ll be doing it without key duo Cillian O’Connor and Lee Keegan after confirmation that they will miss this weekend’s Division 1 encounter.

Keegan is recovering from a suspected dislocated shoulder while O’Connor injured his hamstring in the defeat to Tyrone.

Captain O’Connor is expected to recover in time to face Galway in the Connacht championship on Sunday, May 13.

The outlook for Keegan, however, is somewhat bleaker. The 2016 Footballer of the Year sustained the injury after a heavy challenge from Tyrone’s Padraig McNulty, a tackle which earned the Dungannon man a red card.

Stephen Rochford will have to make do without the influential duo for Sunday’s clash with Donegal as Mayo seek to secure their Division 1 status and salvage something from what has been a disastrous league campaign.

They need a draw to secure their survival and there is good news, too, as Chris Barrett is in contention to feature after turning out for his club last weekend.
