Sitting in O’Moore Park, Laois on Saturday required nerves of pure steel.
The Laois Shopping Centre Intermediate final between Emo and Portlaoise Intermediates is a game that will live long in the memories of everyone who witnessed it.
Four goals flew into the net in the final, with Emo grabbing three of them including what appeared to be the decisive final goal.
Trailing by two points with the clock winding down, a high ball was dropped in at the edge of the Portlaoise square.
The scrappy ball was missed by everyone and bounced towards the goal.
At this stage the goalkeeper had come out to clear up the mess, but a mix up with the defender saw the ball ricochet back out towards danger.
With the keeper and the defender both knocking into each other, the ball fell into the hands of an Emo forward.
He made absolutely no mistake with the finish that fired his club into a 3-6 to 1-11 lead with just seconds left in the game.
The Emo players’ hands reached for the sky, they jumped with glee, they let out a cathartic cheer over such a pivotal score, but sadly, it wasn’t enough.
Seconds later, Jack Brown showed the size of his cojones by nailing a free from distance with the last kick of the game to force the draw. The umpire had barely started waving his flag by the time the referee had blown his whistle.
