They do things a bit differently down in Kerry.

Football is not a religion, it’s a way of life, and in the white hot heat of the East Kerry Championship, nothing will stand in the way of success.

Rathmore, the club of Kerry’s Aidan O’Mahony, were in action against Kilcummin, club of Kingdom goalkeeper Brendan Kealy and former All-Ireland winner Mike McCarthy on Saturday, in the semi final of the competition also known as the O’Donoghue Cup.

The two clubs would be effectively neighbours, and a place in the final next week against either Dr Crokes or Killarney Legion was at stake on Saturday when they clashed in Fitzgerald Stadium.

All-Ireland winner with Kerry in 2014, and All-Star winner Paul Murphy, was set to miss the game however for Rathmore as he was in Cork for an accountancy exam in the afternoon that finished at 1pm with the game due to start at 2.15.

However the defender who plays centre-forward for his club, was helicoptered to the game to ensure he took his place on the field.

Local journalist Jason O’Connor explained all on Facebook,

The game ended in a Rathmore win to book their place in the final  on a after 3-10 to 1-14 win with the final fixed for next weekend.

Normally a car journey from Killarney to Cork city would take about an hour, but not having to worry about the chronic traffic in Macroom made Murphy’s journey back for the game much easier.

After scoring 1-3, we feel that a few more Rathmore players will be looking for helicopter trips to matches.
