Donegal footballer Eamon McGee has revealed that he has been the target of abusive hate mail since coming out in favour of a Yes vote in this Friday’s referendum on marriage equality
In an interview with the Sunday Times ahead of today’s Ulster Championship encounter with Tyrone, the 31-year-old said that following an appearance on the Late Late Show in which he spoke out in favour of gay marriage, he has been subject to vicious abuse.
“There’s been letters to the house with no names on them saying that I’m going to hell and leading the people of Ireland to hell, all this off-the-wall stuff,” McGee said.
“Obviously you’d prefer it didn’t happen but I feel I’m doing the right thing. I’m happy I can look back that I stood by principles I believe in.”
The Gaelic Players’ Association have joined McGee and several other players in endorsing a Yes vote, while Dublin’s Ger Brennan is the highest-profile GAA star to oppose marriage equality.
