Allianz Hurling League: Cork stun Dublin with thrilling semi-final comeback

Rebel hell for the Dubs

Cork 1-27 Dublin 2-23

An injury-time score from Seamus Harnedy and 17 points from Patrick Horgan saw Cork move one step closer to ending a 17-year Allianz League drought with a stunning comeback against Dublin at Nowlan Park this afternoon.

Cork opened the scoring through Conor Lehane but Mark Schutte goaled to give Dublin an advantage they looked set to push home.

A string of points from Conal Keaney and Paul Ryan helped Dublin into a 1-9 to 0-3 lead before David O’Callaghan spun his way through the Cork defence to give the Sky Blues a mammoth 12-point lead.

A trio of Horgan points were key to steadying the Cork ship but the sides then exchanged points as Dublin carried a 2-15 to 0-12 lead into the interval.

Horgan continued his superb form in the second half, pulling Cork within six before Paudie O’Sullivan found the net to make it 2-22 to 1-22.

Three more Horgan points made it a one-point game as the game went into added time, but Cork had not come this far to lose by a point, and when Lehane levelled it looked like ending in a memorable draw until Harnedy stepped up to steal it at the death.

Maurice Shanahan celebrates at the final whistle 19/4/2015

Waterford will meet The Rebels in the final – their first since 2007 – after they edged past Tipperary in the second match at Nowlan Park.

Tipp led by three points at half-time, thanks in large part to goals from ‘Bonnar’ Maher and John O’Dwyer. Colin Dunford found the net for Waterford in the second-half, to set up a tense finish.

Seamus Callinan kept the Premier County ticking over, with frees, but his accuracy was surpassed by Pauric Mahony.

Mahony scored 0-13 and, fittingly, got the final point of the match. He pointed a free to make it 1-19 to 2-15.
