Kimi Antonelli fought back the tears after he clinched his first world title, becoming the youngest champion in Formula 1 history by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Antonelli, at just 20 years of age, finished the race in third, behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
The Italian's race was composed, with some hectic action amongst the other frontrunners. He spent the closing laps watching Hamilton try to get near to pass Verstappen after the two had made initial contact at the first chicane at the restart.
In winning, Antonelli became the first Italian to win the F1 title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
When interviewed after the race, he had tears mixed with laughter, before composing himself to say:
"Thank you so much. We did it. We did it."
As for the world title win, drivers do not receive a direct cash prize or bonus for winning the world championship itself.
The F1 official website explains: "Formula 1 drivers don’t get prize money for winning, though they’ll likely receive a nice financial bonus on top of the base salary they’re paid by their team. Prize money is awarded to F1 teams.
"Of course, success can also potentially create further endorsement and sponsorship opportunities."
Instead, Antonelli's financial reward comes from performance-related championship and podium bonuses that are already built into his contract with Mercedes.
