Mistake aside, a hell of a finish
After a disappointing draw in their opening game against Iceland, Argentina started their game with Croatia on Friday night knowing they had little room for mistakes. Despite this, the opening goal of the game came as a direct consequence of one from their goalkeeper.
Goalless at half-time, a woefully mishit pass from Chelsea’s Willy Caballero gifted the ball to Croatia’s Ante Rebic. The Eintracht Frankfurt forward finished emphatically, dipping a first time volley over the goalkeeper’s head and into the empty goal.
The ball was played back to Caballero by one of his defenders…
But as Caballero attempted to play the ball back to him, he sliced the ball up into the air…
… allowing Rebic to fire home

Caballeros’s immediate reaction to his howler told a story in itself. He knew he was in for it. He was punished.
