Which Irish striker could be soon playing alongside David Villa and Frank Lampard in New York?

Irish striker Eoin Doyle could soon be lining up alongside David Villa and Frank Lampard.

New York City have made an offer for the Chesterfield player who scored his 25th goal of the season last weekend. Doyle is also wanted by the somewhat less glamorous but equally serious Sheffield United, but The Irish Independent have reported that a move to the States has serious potential.

It appears the deal is being held up after Chesterfield told the MLS side to double their initial offer. New York City have to work within a wage cap, and with Villa and Lampard set to be designated players, any further transfers will have fit within the strict financial restrictions imposed on MLS franchises.

This means if they are to increase their original offer, it may affect the wage package they can offer Doyle.

But Doyle is interested in the deal and looks to be on the move at some point today. The Dubliner’s prolific form in League One has also caught the attention of Celtic and Derby County. Doyle has had previous spells with Sligo Rovers and Hibernian.

Hat-tip to the Irish Independent.
