The skipper has a hamstring injury

Could Anthony Martial be thrown in at the deep end?

Word coming out of Manchester is that United captain and front man Wayne Rooney will miss out on this evening’s clash against arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Daily Mirror report that Rooney was not part of Louis van Gaal’s match day squad that travelled to the team hotel last night.

Van Gaal mentioned nothing about a Rooney injury in his pre-match press conference yesterday but the forward was not pictured at yesterday’s final training session and reports from the Liverpool Echo claim that the 29-year-old will not feature today due to a hamstring injury.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United - Premier League

Having sold Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen and sent James Wilson on loan to the Championship, the only real options for Van Gaal up front are €50million man Anthony Martial or the makeshift, elbowy nuisance known as Marouane Fellaini.
