Wes Hoolahan makes statistical best XI from Euro 2016’s opening round

Deservedly so

Statistics show that Wes Hoolahan was among the cream of the crop for the opening round of Euro 2016 matches.

Leading football stats website WhoScored have compiled detailed statistics on shooting, passing, defending throughout the opening round of matches at the tournament and their findings should bring a smile to Irish faces.

The Irish Messi himself, Wes Hoolahan made the cut following his goal-scoring performance against Sweden, taking up the central attacking role in a midfield that boasts superstars such as Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dimitri Payet and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Hoolahan is the sole Irishman in the team that consists of nine different nationalities, with only Switzerland (Schar and Shaqiri) and Germany (Mustafi and Kroos) having more than one representative. Gareth Bale was deemed to be the best striker of the first round, leading the attack ahead of the stacked midfield.
