Our other gripe is this – Where the hell is Wes Hoolahan.
Fan polls are fickle by nature. They are often decided by time, circumstance and an in-built bias for certain teams and players.
That certainly seems the case in the Life Style Sports poll carried out among Ireland football fans.
The poll has come up with many interesting results – we love Olé, Olé, Olé, revere Roy Keane and think the Angela Merkel flag was gas craic – but the area we are most interested in is favourite player. Here is the top three:
- Shane Long 51%
- Jon Walters 21%
- Robbie Keane 13%
That leaves 15% for the rest of the squad to scrap over. That’s John O’Shea, Robbie Brady, Darren Randolph, Seamus Coleman, James McClean, James McCarthy and more fighting for scraps.
It also means Wes Hoolahan, our playmaker extraordinaire, has received less than 13%.
We’re massive Shane Long fans and that goal against Germany will forever live in our memories but the Southampton striker polling more than double Jon Walters’ numbers? More than double the man him ran himself ragged for his country, scored five goals in eight games and who shields a ball better at a corner flag than anyone else on God’s green earth.

It has surely not helped that Walters is currently returning from injury while Long is in scoring form for his club.
Still, we demand the country go to the polls again.
