The return from Euro 2016 was going so well, until last night.
Robbie Keane came back to the La Galaxy, and the MLS, and scored twice in two games. The Ireland captain, who shows no inclinations to retire, had a chance to make it three in three but missed an early penalty.
Keane won the spot-kick when his dink towards goal was blocked by the stray arm of a Houston Dynamos defender. Up stepped Keane but he pushed his kick wide after his stunted run-up.
Keane didn’t let his head drop for too long and played his part in the Galaxy’s winner. He had a shot on target blocked but Steven Gerrard was on hand to coolly slot home to secure the 1-0 win.
Post-match, Galaxy boss Bruce Arena was asked about Keane struggling up front but gave a defiant response:
‘Well Robbie didn’t get a goal, but he was in position to get a couple. But that’s all a part of it, you can’t depend on one player to score. I think Robbie was a threat all night despite the fact that he didn’t get a goal.’
