A bad day all round for everyone involved at Southampton.
Southampton are in limbo at the moment.
They are currently in ninth position in the Premier League on 40 points.
They won’t get relegated and they won’t get Europe.
Their season will pretty much peter out, that much is sure.
Their form this season just cries out inconsistency.
Shane Long has not had the best of seasons for the south coast based club.
He has only managed five goals in all competitions for The Saints – three in the Premier League, one in the FA Cup and one in the League Cup.
It must be said that many of his appearances this season have come as a substitute.
He doesn’t seem to have the confidence of Claude Puel and based on today’s events, that couldn’t be any more true.
Long made another appearance from the bench in Southampton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at St. Mary’s.
Long came on for James Ward-Prowse after 60 minutes after Vincent Kompany had put the away side one goal to the good.

Rather bizarrely however, Long was then taken off after 82 minutes.
He only had 22 minutes on the pitch.
As you could imagine, the Tipperary man was not one bit happy about this and there was an intense staredown with the Southampton management as he exited the fray.

Long only signed a four-year contract last year but after this latest incident, we wonder if the 30-year-old will be lining out for The Saints next season.
