WATCH: Russian fan somehow managed to get a flare gun past security and inside the ground

SportsJOE

This is insane.

Euro 2016 was supposed to have the tightest security ever seen at a major sporting event in Europe.

And while the extra precautions were put in place to protect supporters from terrorist threats, rather than from idiots throwing bottles and chairs at one another, it is still worrying to see how little police presence there was inside the Stade Velodrome on Saturday night.

Moments after the final whistle blew, a section of Russia fans vaulted the flimsy tarpaulin barrier that was the only thing separating them from the English supporters, and charged across the stand causing pandemonium and panic.

Eye witnesses reported hearing a loud bang seconds before that charge and now footage has emerged of a flare gun being used to fire a flare from the Russian section behind the goal where Vasili Berezutski headed the last minute equaliser.

The flare landed in the stand on the other side of the pitch and could have caused serious damage.

But surely Uefa and the French security services must ask how on earth someone managed to get a flare gun inside the stadium?
