Watch: Malaga fans appear to shout homophobic abuse at Cristiano Ronaldo

Deeply unpleasant

Robert Redmond

Cristiano Ronaldo must be used to abuse from opposition fans by now, but that doesn’t excuse the tone of these chants.

The Real Madrid superstar would be a primary target for opposition chants, thanks to his self-confidence, animated nature and the fact he’s so damn good.

So, when Ronaldo stepped up to take a penalty against Malaga on Sunday afternoon, some jeers and whistles were to be expected.

However, the apparent homophobic chants of ‘Sal del armario’, or ‘Come out of the closet’, crossed the lines of fair game or any type of decency and are inexcusable.

Ronaldo missed the subsequent penalty, a rarity for the 31 year old. Hopefully such chants are as rare as Ronaldo penalty misses.
