Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
The atmosphere in the Stade de Lyon on Sunday for Ireland’s Euro 2016 round of 16 clash against hosts France was absolutely electric.
Even before the obligatory pre-match national anthems, there was a great air of expectation in the stadium as both sets of fans prepared for their teams to do battle on the field.
When the opening notes of Amhrán na bhFiann sounded, and the Irish began belting out the verse, it was clear that this would be no ordinary occasion. Each line was delivered with more enthusiasm than the last.
Then came the turn of the French to sing their war cry and not to be outdone, the Irish joined in with them, which made for an extremely powerful rendition La Marseillaise.
