‘If it’s true,’ high-horsed Gary Neville on MNF, ‘it is the most despicable breach of team spirit I’ve ever seen’
Kevin Mirallas apparently, if multitudes of recent media reports are to believed, wants a transfer away from Everton. The Belgian found an excellent way to expedite a hasty move away from Goodison Park, this evening, when he botched a glorious goalscoring chance.
Mirallas grabbed the ball off teammate Leighton Baines after former Toffee Joleon Lescott daftly gifted Everton a penalty. Baines has missed one penalty in his career – against Manchester United this season – so Mirallas took spot-kick matters into his own, belligerent hands.
The midfielder yoinked the ball away from Baines, got a few tongue lashings from Stephen Naismith and two passive aggressive slaps to the head from the vexed defender. He then proceeded to miss the penalty by striking the base of Ben Foster’s post in the West Brom goal. That left it 0-0 at half-time.
Sylvester Stallone popped up on the big screen to tell Toffees supporters they would be part of his new movie, Rocky IV, as a film crew did the rounds during the break. In the Sky Sports Monday Night Football studios, meanwhile, Gary Neville blasted Mirallas for his act of penalty skulduggery.
When Sly’s film crew packed up and action resumed, Mirallas had been yanked off the pitch and replaced by Bryan Oviedo.
That may be the last Everton fans see of the Belgian misanthrope. As for the match, it ended scoreless.
