Video: Jermain Defoe is back! Opens the scoring with absurd left-footed volley

The perfect time to score

Darragh Murphy

How important will this goal prove in the context of Sunderland’s season?

It’s a strike worthy of keeping the Black Cats up and it exploded from the left boot of Jermain Defoe to give Sunderland a 1-0 lead over fierce rivals Newcastle at the break.

After a long punt up the field by Costel Pantilimon, Steven Fletcher got his head to the ball and guided it perfectly into the path of the onrushing Defoe who scooped the ball past Tim Krul who had no chance.

Glorious!

The goal was so good, in fact, that Krul laughed his way back to the dressing rooms with Defoe. Not something Newcastle fans would like to see.
