Xabi Alonso seemed genuinely chuffed to be back at Anfield on Sunday.
The Bayern Munich midfielder played his first game back at his old ground in Steven Gerrard’s farewell charity game, and said after the game ‘it was great to be back home’.
Alonso spent five years at Liverpool, joining from Real Sociedad in 2004 before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009, and said following the 2-2 draw that the game was his chance to say a proper goodbye to the fans.
The Spaniard said he was ‘really happy’ with the reception from the Anfield crowd and that some things never change, like Gerrard scoring penalties, and his old mate Jamie Carragher giving them away.
Alonso then went and won the internet (again) with this tweet.
