Louis van Gaal (rightly) took all the headlines for his speech during last night’s player of the year awards at Old Trafford.
But we feel that Wayne Rooney’s subtle dig at Liverpool during the awards ceremony is also worth talking about a little bit.
The Manchester United captain was asked about how his side had missed Champions League football this season and he came back with a response that got one of the biggest laughs of the night.
“If you look at Liverpool and what happened to them. They were without it [Champions League football] for years … which was no shame.”
A comment like that from a United player who cut his teeth at Everton is far from surprising.
Rooney went on to claim that one year without competing in the Champions League was far too much for a club of the calibre of Manchester United.
