Victor Valdes set for Old Trafford return after Standard Liege cancel his contract

Manchester United fans: thought you’d seen the last of Victor Valdes? Think again.

Having spent the majority of his career picking his nose in the Barcelona goal while Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi et al passed their opponents to death somewhere else on the field, the Spaniard arrived at Manchester United at the start of last year.

Many tipped him to take the number one shirt from David De Gea last summer, but thanks to a dodgy fax machine in Madrid and a falling out of epic proportions with Louis van Gaal, Valdes found himself being shipped out to Belgian club Standard Liege.

The 34-year-old was expected to stay in Belgium until the end of the season, but after picking up an injury, it now appears that he’s heading back to Manchester.

Standard have confirmed that Valdes, who is currently injured, will be leaving the club with immediate effect.

As with Valdes, there is (of course) a massive question mark hanging over the future of Van Gaal, with at least 16 reports an hour linking Jose Mourinho with his job. We’re not going to be the ones to suggest it, but what’s the betting it’s being reported within a matter of hours that Mourinho intends to make Valdes his new ‘keeper?
