Turkey legend Hakan Şükür could be jailed for ‘tweeting about the President ‘

Hakan Şükür might well be Turkey’s leading goalscorer by a country mile, but his decision to criticise the the country’s president could see him serving jail time.

According to reports but the provate Dogan news agency, Şükür has been charged with posting tweets from his account @HakanSukur which contain “insulting content against Mr President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his son.”

Although the content of the tweets was not made clear by the report, 44-year-old Şükür has claimed that he didn’t intend to aim them at the president.

The former footballer’s claims were dismissed by prosecutors, meaning that he could face up to four years imprisonment if he is convicted.
