Transfer Talk: Manchester United ready to meet Liverpool’s asking price for Raheem Sterling

It couldn't happen, could it?

Robert Redmond

A player hasn’t transfer from Liverpool to Manchester United in over 80 years, but that could be about to change.

It’s been reported that Raheem Sterling is wanted by United, and they’re prepared to meet Liverpool’s potential asking price of £50 million. The backpage of The Sun this morning, headlined ‘Theatre of Raheem’, says Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City also want to sign the 20 year old, but the interest from Old Trafford has ‘sent shockwaves through Liverpool’.

Sterling gave an interview this, without permission from his club, where said he would not re-enter contract negotiations until the end of the season, after turning down £100,000 per week contract from Liverpool.

The Jamaican born England international claims it’s trophies, and not money, that he’s interested in, and he was ‘flattered’ by reported interest from Arsenal, Liverpool’s opponents today.

CBss1sJWEAEInwvIt could be an exciting  summer for Manchester United fans, even if the miraculous Sterling move doesn’t come off, the club looked primed to sign Mats Hummels. According to The Guardian, the Borussia Dortmund defender will consider his future at the end of the season, and United are ready to meet the club’s valuation.

Rumours linking Hummels with a move to Old Trafford have been going on longer than Sterling’s contract dispute with Liverpool, but there appears to more substance to the current whispers.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, the Dortmund chief executive, said this week: ‘The situation at Dortmund is like this: We’ve lost one major player each year but we don’t stop playing football. To be clear: Mats knows his contractual situation, he described it in that interview himself. The decision where Mats will play next season will only be taken by BVB’.

With the club looking unlikely to return to the Champions League, and the player himself admitting: ‘Eventually, I’d like to leave the Bundesliga’, a summer move by United for the 26 year old is looking increasingly likely.

A player who looks also to be on the move this summer is Paulo Dybala, and his agent says an English club has already made contact. The 21-year-old striker has been impressive for Palermo this season, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances, and has attracted the attention of a host of top European clubs.

According to The Daily Star, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus, Roma and Inter Milan are all interested in the Argentine, who is valued at €40 million, and has rejected offers to extent his contract with the Sicilian club.

The player’s agent, Gustavo Mascardi, said: ‘We have received important offers for Dybala, including from abroad where he is in particular wanted by an English club. There are two or three Italian proposals too’.

‘Is he worth €40m? Well, a player like him certainly can’t be just given away’.

Exactly Gustavo, anything less than €40 is the equivalent of just giving a player away.
