The former Liverpool defender, who had argued for the inclusion of Payet, laughed and called the decision a "joke".
Twitter users also voted for Stoke City's Jack Butland ahead of David de Gea. Chris Smalling ahead of Laurent Koscielny and Ross Barkley ahead of Santi Carzorla.
