The Republic of Ireland international has been targeted by Middlesbrough as a key ingredient for their first season back in the Premier League.

Boro consider Premier League experience a vital trait as they prepare a squad capable of preventing an immediate return to the Championship.

And, according to a report in The Sun, Aitor Karanka is keen on bringing Walters in for Middlesbrough’s first season in the top flight in seven years.

The versatile forward will play a massive part in Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign which gets underway next month and is unlikely to listen to entertain any transfer talk before then.

It’s believed that Mark Hughes, who only started Walters in one of Stoke’s last nine games, would be willing to part with the 32-year-old for a fee of around €3m.
