Simon Mignolet doesn’t hold back on Liverpool’s decision to let Karius leave

Loris Karius has left Liverpool, while Simon Mignolet remains

When Loris Karius departed Liverpool for a loan spell with Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, he left Simon Mignolet and new signing Alisson as the two senior goalkeepers in the squad with Premier League experience to their names.

Karius’ departure had been coming for quite a while after he failed to capitalise on the opportunity afforded to him by manager Jurgen Klopp. The German keeper had been trusted in goal throughout the season, but numerous errors – most notably two in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid – were the last straw for Klopp.

Both Karius and Mignolet – who had interchanged goalkeeping duties in recent seasons – had been linked with moves away from Anfield, but in the end, it appears that it is just Karius who will leave.

That fact appears to have rubbed Mignolet up the wrong way, and the club’s decision to allow Karius to leave while he remains as “bizarre”.

“I find it bizarre that Karius is [on loan], while I also had options to be [loaned],” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“But for some reason that was not possible. A goalkeeper who was preferred to me last season may leave on a loan basis. Strange. [Karius leaving] does not change anything for me. I have always been clear. I want to play.

“Number two or number three makes little difference. Playing minutes is the most important.

“Nothing has been said to me after the departure of Loris. So I do not know what my future at Liverpool is. We’ll see what happens this week.”
