Countinho’s strike came long after the two minutes of stoppage time had elapsed, but referee Mark Clattenburg allowed play to continue, giving the Brazilian the chance to get the goal.
Former Premier League referee Howard Webb admitted he was “extremely surprised” that the game was still being played.
